SHIPOWNERS AND ALIENS
POSITION ON THE WATERFRONT. ; A rather ourioua' state of affairs hae aTisen. through the deoision of certain shipping companies to dispense with the services of wharf labourers of German, Mstrian, and Turkish descent. While some of the shipping companies have rigidly enforced the decision and dismissed all hands of these nationalities, .other companies have, it is alleged,, retained the services of foremen although they are of the enemy nationality.' Again the U.S.S. Company state that they have made no move in the matter, as no agreement of concerted action has been arrived at. It is understood, however, that altogether about 12 or 15 men "have been paid off. Of this number moat are Germans} a few are Austrians, and two , are Turks. Three of the dismissed men are 1 said to be members of the Wellington Wharf Labourers' Union. Speaking to a DoimiioN reporter yesterday, the manager of a prominent shipping "company said ±hat,in yiewof recent facts, and' in the. interests of shipping people, the step taken, though it might mean undue hardship to some, ,was absolutely necessary.;.' ; ''/.., .
