MR C. K. WILSON'S CAMPAIGN
THE PROSPERITY UNDER REFORM Mr. 0.-. K. Wilson, Government candidate for the Taumarunui seat, duiy .ing his address to a large meeting at Ohura, was accorded a splendid hearing, and a vote of thanks and confidence in him and the Massey Party was carried with great enthusiasm. He dealt firstly with the financial position, comparing the stringency existing in the'lending departments of the State in 1911 (as • shown' by letters to. Sir Joseph Ward from the Advances Board) to the "satisfactory condition as it presented itself to-.day. Since coming to Ohura ho had learnt of a statement in circulation that there were cases where men applied for a grant of money, and although the board only advanced them portion of it they were charged interest on the whole amount applied for! Although he felt sure the statement was' absurd; he' telegraphed . to the Superintendent and had received the following' reply:—"Advances Office only charges interest on amount actually paid over to borrower, and from the date it leaves the office." He (Mr. Wilson)' had never said he Was against borrowing. On the contrary, he believed in borrowing all they could get to assist in the development of the country. When Mr. Massey came into power.it was stated that dry rot would set in, but the country had never before experienced such prosperity as at the present time. He dealt' at length 'with the land and defence questions, and maintained that the people of New Zea-; - - land would have been prouder to-day if her troops had been convoyed to Samoa by their.own' warships' instead of having "had to wait until the Australian and other gunboats were ready to escort ' them. He condemned the proposal made by Sir Joseph. Ward 'at the Imperial Conference in 1911, which would have meant taxing us at the rate of 10s, per capita without giving -the people of this country a voice in affairs. Coming to an important local question, tho Stratford to Main Trunk railway, he reminded the meeting of the'pracr tical manner in which Mr. Massey was carrying out his promise to have the railway at Ohura township in four years. As a matter of fact, men were now employed on the line all: the way from Okahukura to Matiere. , ;
