HUTT AND PETONE NEWS.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) The seventieth anniversary of the Lower Hutt Methodist Sunday School was celebrated yesterday, and good attendances were 'reported throughout the day. The speakers were: Morning, Rev. Arch.' Hunt; afternoon, Mr. H. J. Grave, president Wellington Sunday School Union; evening, Hey. W. Beckett. A feature of the services was t'ho singing 'of a children's choir, under' Mr.' It; Y. Shearer.. The bbatsheds on £ho Petone foreshore are rapidly disappearing, and during the week-end one moro was .removed. There remains now only five private sheds between tho wharf and Beach Street.. . . . Tlip Petone .Municipal Band rendered a programme of music at tho Lower Hutt Recreation Grounds yesterday af-, ternoon to a fair attendance. Tho results of a race flown from Gisborne last week,.under the auspices of the Hutt Valley Homing Pigeon ' Society, were: —C. Gough's True Blue; time, Bhr. 51min: 4osec.; velocity, 812.47 yards per minute, 1. R. Booth's RedPeino; time, 9hr. 12min.; velocity, 771.29 yards per minute, 2. Whitehead and Booth's Liberty Belle; time, 121ir. •55min.; velocity; 549 yards per minute, 3. .'.'■' .. ; ■■".'. .- ■ ■ ■ The Empire Theatre, built by the Petone .Worlungmen's Club, -was opened on Friday evening by the Mayor of Petone (Mr. J. W. M'Ewan). Speeches were delivered by Mr. R.'Gunlift'e (president Petone Club) and Mr. Mace (president Wellington Workingmeu's Club), and:a programme of songs, etc.; was submitted and much appreciated. A dance was afterwards held, the M.C.'s being Messrs. Waketield, Sims, Arnold, and Taylor, whilst the music was supplied by Mrs. Fraser and Miss Pomfrey.
