HUTT AND PETONE NEWS.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) A meeting of the Petone Swimming and Life-Saving Club was held last evening, Sir. E. Price presiding. It was de T cided: to-.open tJio season on December 12, with the following programme:— 33 yards maiden race, 50 yards open raco, 50 yards High School boys' race, 33-yards primary school 'boys' .race, neatest header, and walking the greasy boom. A feature of the sports is to be a swimming race for ladies, for which Messrs. George and George have offered a- special prize. An offer of a silver cup for annual competition and a medal to be won outright was received from Mr. E. Binns. It was agreed that the colours of the club should bo navy blue,'with the club's monogram attached. ' ■

The results of a tennis match, played between the girls of the Lower Hutt and Petone. District High Schools were as follow (Hutt players mentioned first} :— Phyllis Waugli and Doris Hiokson beat Sylvia Mather and Winifred Mather, 20—16; Rhoda Gibbons 'and Alexa Osborne beat-Lillian ' Rodger and Ella Brocklebank, • 20—19; Jean Macaskill and Annie M'llvride lost to Vera Humphries' and Dorothy Wild,'l9—2o'; Myrtle Edwards and Doris Smith beat Winifred Monks and Florence Waugh, 20—18. The match will be continued on Slonday. ' ■ Two pupils of the Petone District High School are sitting for matriculation and'2l out of a roll number of 44 have entered for .the Civil Service .examination. '

A. concert was given on Wednesday evening in aid of the Trust Fund of the Petone Nelson Street Methodist Church. The Rev. J. J. Lewis presided, and gavo a resume of the year's work. The choir rendered several items, and the follow-

ing contributed to the programme:— Misses Foster; Lewis, and Cross, and Messrs. Bradley, Avison,: Chamberlain, Bryant, and Maud. • Upwards of 600 assorted toys were distributed among the ohiklren at'the Gear Company's employees' picnic on Wednesday, but this mimber proved inadequate for the vast army of juveniles who besieged the toy department. However, 300 more were secured yesterday, and these mil be' distributed among holders of tickets to-morrow afternoon at the Ambulance Rooms, Petone.
