CANTERBURY METHODIST SYNOD

' The representative ses6ion of the South Canterbury, Methodist Synod ~ opened yesterday morning, when. some 3b' representatives responded to their names, It was decided to recommend the conference to appoint a homo missionary.to assist the Oamaru'minister. That Timaru be granted a probationer for another year in place of a second married man. Increases were reported in church , membership, in Sunday schools scholars, and attendants at public worship. Resolutions were passed, anent the licensing' poll, on the gambling evil; and also on the prevalence of several vices. The proposal too establish a Conference's Expenses Fund was approved, the details to be left to the conference. The proposal to extend the term of ministerial appointments boyond tho term of fivo years to any-cue church was approved by 17 to 7. The conference remit was that each extended appointment be only made by a- 75 per cent, vote of tho conference, but this was felt to be -undemocratic and should be determined by a bare majority. In order, however, to provide an adequate ■ safeguard it was decided to recommend that such appointments bo made by a ,55 per cent, majority of the conference. The Rov. G. F. Stockwell was elected representative to the Christchurch Conference. _ It was decided to hold the next Synod in Oamaru.
