BOWLS

: TWO.FEET ON MAT. NEWTOWN CLUB DISAPPROVES. Some months ago the Dominion Bowling Association adopted the Australian Idea of four-foot mats, and passed a regulation that players should "have,' a portion of two fcet'on the mat" when the bowl is delivered. Last evening th© Newtown Club wrestled with the question for over an hour, v viewing the matter from all aspects. . Generally, the • opinions • expressed were opposed to'the twd-feetoh-the-mat ( principle. This was crystallised into the following motion that was moved'by.:Mr. Geo. Prince, seconded by Mr. Wylie, and carried by a large majority:— : " S'"' .. ...' . ■.-/ ; ;. ■ ;, "That, the "smaller mats-be s Teverfed to, and that the'penalty of removing the bowl be imposed if tho back foot is not holding on' the mat when tho player is delivering the bowl." . ;, This" practically means tho ordinary Btyle'of play 'as'it"is seldom; if ever, that' a player s back foot leaves the mat when delivering a bowland is a plain intimation that no innovation is desired by'the members of the Newtown Club.

There was also discussed the question of allowing certain playing privileges. to the wives and daughters of members. In. this regard it was decided that one rink should he available for the ladies between 2 p.m; and 4.30' p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays up to the end of the season. The matter is to he reviewed at the annual meeting. ,
