MID-WEEK ASSOCIATION

DEMPSEY NOT OUT'2OI

CENTURIES FOR WARNE, BOWLES, AND BEECHEY.

The second round of the mid-week competitions was concluded on the Basin Reserve yesterday afternoon. The wickets were in first-class condition. Shortly after the start of play a fine rain set in [or about an hour, which, made the turf greasy. Some fine batting performances were put up.. The best was by Dempsey, batting for Oriental A, who.made 201, 'not out, and only gave one chance, a hard one to mid-on, when 'he was 172. This is a,.record for mid-week cricket (the previous best was by tho late G. Burton, 195), and the second best in Wellington. The best performance was by Ken Tucker, 221, not out, playing for the Midland Clnb against a Wellington Club B team. The match Rivals—Union resulted in a win for the Union by 33 Tuns on the first innings, the winners thus scaring a two-point win. Rivals made 213 In their, first innings, and Union had lost two wickets for 90 runs on the first day. Continuing yesterday the two not-out men—Taylor (44) and Warne (32)— soon got to work, and, treating all bowlera alike, piled on the runs, carrying the score to 175 before Taylor (90) was bowled' by Smith. ■ Warne, by lucky play, made 101, not out. The innings closed for 246. Rivals started their second innings, and at the call of time had lost six wickets for 167 runs, of which Beechey made 102, only giving one chance when he was 98. In the match Oriental A v. B, the A team had an easy win (due to the fine batting by Dempsey) by an innings and 87 Tuns. In the.Junior, Wardell's defeated last year's winners, while St. Patrick's College went under to Union. RIVALS V. UNION. Rivals, first innings 213 'Union—First. Innings. - : O'Sullivau, played on, b.
