TRADE OF THE PORT

STATISTICS FOR THE YEAR SOME NOTABLE RECORDS At last evening's meeting of the Harbour Board a most interesting summary of statistics for tho year ended September 30 was presented to members in committee, and at the conclusion of tho meeting were handed to the Press. For the 'sake of comparison three' years' figures are given under each hoading. ; It will bo seen in. the tables below that tho. year just ended has on the whole been a very satisfactory one. A rather substantial decrease in tho quantity of inward cargo from British and foreign ports is accounted for by tho strike of last year and by. the influence of war conditions since the beginning of August. The deorease in the quantity of inward colonial and coastal goods and transhipments is negligible. A new record has been established during the year- in the tonnage of general goods shipped outwards to British and foreign ports, and fresh records have been established in the quantity of cheese and frozen meat ehipped away .from the port. On, the other hand butter has decreased, due mainly to the fact that Auckland supplies nave been shipped direct from the northern • port. The following are the detailed figures, with a comparison with those of the previous year:— , ; GENERAL GOODS..' 1913-11. 1912-13. Tods. Tons. In 1883-4 the average tonnage of vessels using the port was 287 tons, ten years later it was , 436 tons, and .during the last year it was 942 tons, which figures show the ever-increasing size of vessels that visit Wellington.
