TEE FERRY SERVICE

EXTENSION OF THE WOOL JETTY. • The Wellington Harbour Board ia calling for tenders for tho erection of an extensive addition, to the Wool Jetty, the' wharf between tho present Ferry Wharf and tjie- Railway Wharf. These are to close at tho office of the board on January 27 next and thereafter the work is to be proceeded with at' once. This picco of wliarf construction should interest the general public, as the westtern side, of the new- structure is to he ■ permanently reserved for tho berthago of. the Wellington-Lyttelton ferry steamers, so that the'Harboiir Board's latest project is a portion of the.long-deferred scheme of synchronising tho ferry and railway' services. When the I'ew Central Railway Station is erected in Bunny Street, it will be found that it will beonly about threo minutes' walk : from the ferry, stoamor, thus providing every facility to the public for catching trains and steamers. The Wool Jetty as it exists to-dny'has a. broad base,' 120 ft. in width (on which stands an octagonal* shapeaVshecOy narrowing to a wharf 34ft.ill width'. " The length over all is 253 ft. The oxtension consists of widening the outer part of the .wharf from 34ft. to ; 70ft., 'and extending "the length, by an- , other 219 ft., which will give a total length of 472 ft ., The wharf'as altered is to carry a. large waiting-sbed for passengers (233 ft. in length by-25ft. in broadth), which will have an ornamental cantilever verandah projecting 6ft. (on the western or ferry-boat side), roofed with Marseilles tiles. The wholo- western side of this shed will practically be permanently open. No walls are provided on tie western f Bide at all,' the roof being supported'by iron pillars placed 20ft. apart. Already the berth Jias been dredged to an even depth of 24ft., so that., there will always be plenty of water for the Maori nnd Wahinc;.' ''. . '■'■'-..

So far the arrangement is not to .deal with the luggage" in "'the-new waitingroom, but to make provision for expeditious handling inl (the existing) She'd, .but nothing definite has been settled on the point, • ■'■ . .
