ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES

An inquest was held by Mr. D. Gi A. ; Cooper, S.M., late yesterday afternoon concerning the death of William Henry Mayhew, a well-known, tallow dealer, who died suddenly at his father's residence, 14 Pitarua Street, at 4.40 p.m. on Sunday. ' Evidence was 'given' by Dr. Kington Fyffe that death was due to aneurism .of the 'heart'. James Mayhew, father of- deceased, said. that deceased took ill on Friday, improved on Saturday, but died suddenly on Sunday afternoon. Deceased was about 32 years old. The Coroner returned a verdict in accordance with the medical evidence. BOATING ACCIDENT. (By Teleempli.—Press Association.! Rotorua, November 23. About 4 o'clock yesterday a boat accident occurred 011 Lake Rotorua, thereby four lives were lost. • , A party of seven were returning in a sailing boat from Mokoia Island, when a gust capsized the craft. Four of the occupants sank . very shortly—Herbert Webb, aged 40, a plumber, hin wife, . about 35 years of age, and their daughter, Phyllis, aged 13 years, and Moses Edmonston, aged 39, a carpenter. The other occupants clung to the boat until they wero rescued. One, named Ridley, was greatly exhausted. Only Edmondston's body has been recoverod so far. Webb, leaves two sons, aged 10 and 11 years, and Edmondston leaves a widow, but no children. FOUND DROWNED. West port, November 23. The body of Patrick M'Cran ot M'Cann, who disappeared from Murchison (nine miles from Westport) on October 26, was found, in the Buller River at Westport. ' A verdict was returned of found drowned, there being no evidence to show how deceased got into the river.

AN OLD MAN'S SUICIDE.. Thames, November 23. An elderly man, aged 76, named William Madden, who cut his throat in the hotel where ho was employed as cook, succumbed to his injuries. Deceased came to Auckland, and had been in ill-liealth. The wound itself was not serious, but his general health militated against recovery. At the inquest a verdiot of suicide during mental derangement was returned.
