SALVATION ARMY'S EFFORT

YEAR'S INCREASE £1781 The annual meeting in connection with tli© Self-Denial effort of the Salvation Array was held last evening in the Citadel, Vivian Street.' -The chief secretary (Lieutenant-Colonel Powley) presided, and paid a warm' compliment to all those who had contributed to the remarkable success of the effort. Last year, he pointed out/the sum of £17,129 was collected in the Dominion, whereas this year, in spite of the war and other calb upon the public and private purse, the sum raised was £18,911, an increase of £1781 over the effort of 1913. The result was loudly acclaimed. , The chief secretary read a telegram from General Booth expressing delight at the figures. Commissioner Hodder, who has arrived in Australia on his way to New Zealand; also cabled • from Adelaide in similar terms.
