NOTES AND COMMENTS
fBT Glbhcoe.T Mr. B. Goodbohere,. 'secretary' of the Feilding Jockey Club, anticipates a. very successful Spring Meeting on Saturday and Monday next; Special train arrangements have been made, and those present should witness some good racing. The splendid rain whioh. fell yesterday will do the tracks at headquarters a lot of good, as they were becoming very hard owing to the long spell of dry weather. Several horses were beg/NMng to show signs of soreness, and the fall of rain will be much welcomed by owners.
. The work of fencing the new straight six furlongs at Trentham is now bemc proceeded with. There is a beautiful ! turf on it, and it is expected that the track will be a success in every way. „ o ??P utation las U P ■*«» the'present won £3830 in stakes, viz., £030 at two vears old, and £2900 at three years old": The yearling colt by the Welkin— leppo, for which Mr. R. Buick paid oUU guineas in Melbourne recently, represents an important purchase for the Dominion. Tho Welkin who is a son of the celebrated Flying Fox, lias proved himself a marked success as a sire of speedy two-year-olds. Tcppo is an imported mare by Ladas from Dum Dura, by Carbine from Charm, the latter being a daughter of St. Simon. It will, therefore, be seen that the youngster purchased by Mr. Buick can lay claim to a high-class pedigree. .
Rene was very light after racing, at blenheim, and it will probably be found expedient to rest tho daughter of Multifid tor a short time.
There has been an epidemic of colds at Trentham lately, and several stables have been visited.
Word from Ricoartoii states that P. M'Grat'h is' making arrangements to have Thrax and Taraihauser schooled tor hurdle racing.
At the Sunbury meeting held in tho middle of the present month tho. New Zealand-owned Fireworks, a place-gotter at Flemington, won the steeplechase. It is quite on the cards that the Wei-, lington Racing Club may decide to proceed with the erection of the new grandstand immediately after the close of the Cup Meeting in January. The mai> ter was shelved at the beginning of the war, on account of the expected financial stringency.
lhe people that are agitating for tho introduction of the totalfsator in New bollth Wales will not he pleased with tho reception given it by the Holman Cabinet, which recently decided to leave it to a private member to introduce tho Bill.
lhe celerity with which the races were started at Riccaiton was the subject of much favourable comment by visitors at the New Zealand Cup Meet"ig-* The starter was Mr. A. G. Wood. Ihe three placed., horsea in the C..T.C. Derby, Balboa, Reputation, and First Alight, figure in the Auckland Cup, ami the weighting of them bv Handicapper Jforso was awaited wth a cood deal of interest. In according Reputation Bst. lib. Mr. Morso has not taken any chances with him. The other pair appear about rightly placed.
