GALLANT BRITISH REGIMENT
WEST KENTS REPULSE DESFERATE ATTACKS (Reo. November 23, 0.15 a.m.) London, November 22. Thrilling narratives have been told of the bravery of the West Kents, who covered the retreat of tho Fifth Division after Mons, and who figured prominently at the Aisne. The latest exploit was a fivo days' defence of Neuvo Chappello against heavy odds, at the end of October. A tromendous artillery fire forced tho Yorkshire Light Infantry to evacuate tho trenches, leaving the Kents' left flank exposed to tho German trenches, which were only five hundred yards distant. Desperate attacks followed. . The Kents shnttered the attackers with rifle fire, and drove them back with a bayonet charge The Germans renewed tho attack on the following day when tho trenches were 250 yards apart, tho Germans working- to tho Kent's rear.
