EON* 'A'. L'. HERDMAN'S ATTITUDE. ,t' A 4 K f lbnrn las* night- .the. Hon. A. ii. Herdman said ho could not- support any policy which would force any taxPayer to eubsoribe to a proposal compelling him to contribute by means'of taxation towards any education which involved religious teaching which was repugnant to Bis religious beliefs. Hβ was a firm, believer in the value of religious teaching, but he was likewise a nrm believer in our present system of education, and was opposed to any proposition whioh tended to interfere with that system. Hβ was in favour of what was known as the Nelson system, under which clergymen had the use of the school buildings one half-hour each week outside of school houra for the imparting of religious instruction to tho children present. His experience •taught him that no amount of religious instruction would achieve much unless the children had proper homo life—home life such as would build up character j«nd make boys and girls strong men and women. The candidate's utterjances. on the subject wore greeted with ihearty applause.
