WHEN THE RUSSIANS CAME TO CZERNOWITZ
A DRAMATIC LESSON November 18. Details are to hand of the Russian annexation of Bukowina, a crownland of Austria. : The Cossacks made a dramatic entry into Czernowitz with bands of choristers. General ArintinofE. then summoned the townsfolk to the steps of . 1 the Municipal Palace and levied six hundred thousand roubles (£62,500) in revenge for the amount the Austrian General Daulann exacted from Kamenoz and Podolski, where General ArintinofE's daughter had been obliged to sacrifice her own jewels; otherwise he threatened to immediately train his bigguns and level Czernowitz to the ground. - The populace was terror-stricken, but finally the Archbishop persuaded the General to accept three hundred-thou-sand crowns (about £12,500). For a whole day the city fathers and priests travelled the countryside begging. Peasants came to the Town_ Hall weeping and deposited their trinkets, while the Jews sacrificed their ritual candelabra. The Archbishop contributed 50,000 crowns' worth or silver and altar furniture. Finally, tho burgomaster broke into tho shops of the goldsmiths, who fled. When the money had beon collected, General Arintinoff came to the Town Hall-and 6aid: "City Fathers, you' look fagged." After inspecting the treasure* lie said: "Take it back; I only wanted you to experience the heartburnings Kamenez and Podolski."
