PATRIOTIC ROSE SHOW

A GREAT SUCCESS OPENED BY THE GOVERNOR The floor space of the. Town Hall was fully taxed yesterday afternoon and evening, lv hen the Wellington Rose and Carnation Club's Patriotic Rose Show was held. The entries ■ were greater than ever before, and the blooms were equal to those exhibited at last year's show, although tho recent high winds had been responsible for some damage. His Excellency the Governor (Lord Liverpooll opened the show in the afternoon, and ho was accompanied by Lady Liverpool. The attendance then was largo., and included the Mayor (Mr. J. P. Luke). His Excellency was mot by the president of the club, Mr. J. B. Harcourt, who briefly addressed those gathered at the Town Hall before His Excellency spoke. Mr. Haicourt said that.the club was extremely pleased at the number of entries, which was larger than last year, but some of the loses had- been damaged by the winds prevailing recently. The sweet pea.showing was not bo large, but he drew particular attention to the fine exhibition by Mr. Trevethick, of the Hutt. He mentioned that Mr. W. E. Lippiatt, Auckland, Messrs. F. Cooper, Ltd., Wellington, Mr. Waugh, Hutt, and Mr. H. Waddcll, had made ■ trade displays, and had generously donated all the blooms and pot plants for sale to swell the proceeds, which were to go in aid of the Mayor's Patrotic Fund and the Belgian, Great Britain, and Ireland Relief Funds.

His Excellency said that he believed it was the second occasion on which he had been asked to open the show. Her Excellency and he had great pleasure in coming to the show that afternoon. He greatly admired the patriotic spirit of the organisers of the show, and the exhibitors in coming forward iii the manner they had done. . He considered the spirit which animated all the dependencies of the Crown needed no comment on his part. His Excellency then declared the show open. During the afternoon the South Wellington Orchestral Society played selections in the Concert Chamber, where light refreshments were served by Mrs. A. M. Gore and a committee of ladies. The Tramway Band gave their services in the evening, and played a number,, of selections in the Town Hall. Sweets and flowers were sold in the hall, in aid of the fund, the departments being under the control of Miss Joseph and Mrs. W. Turnbull respectively. Other displays were made bv Mr. C. Treve-, thick and Mr. J. M'Millah. The champion bloom of. the show was entered by Mr. F. Penn, of Otaki, it being a magnificent "William Sheen." Mr. Penn also won the points prize, valued at £5 55., presented by Air. J. A. Peck.

Hie receipt* from all sources amounted to £250. The thanks of the club are due to the special donors who so ably assisted. Penn; 3 blooms, yellow, F. J. Natban; 3 blooms of one variety, Miss Charlosworth; 6 blooms, distinct varieties, to be grown within a radius of live miles of the G.P.0., H. M. Goro 1, S. G. Pearce 2, G. Remington 3; best exhibit of three roses, in one vase, F. Penn; three blooms, colours and varieties optional •'(open to growers of less than 75 rose plants),.AY.'Bock. Nathan 2; 6 blooms, distinct varieties, "Weightman and Son 1 and_ 2; 12 blooms, distinct varieties, Weisditman, and Son 1 and 2; best trade display, F. Cooper, Ltd. Suburban Growers. —Class 19, ' Miss Monerieff 1, S. P.. Jeffreys 2; Class 20, E. Dryden 1, W. Hirscliberg 2; Class 21, Miss Walsh; Class 22, Mr. W. Bock 1 and 2.
