Ayoutli of 19 years of age named Walter Henry George Bedford, who the previous day pleaded! guilty to the theft of a bioycle ; valued at £4, the property of John Skitrap, Lower Hutt, appeared for sentence at the Magistrate's Court on Saturday, before Mr. D. G. A. Cooper, S.M. Chief Detective Broberg detailed a list of previous convictions agamßtthe accused, inoluding theft in 1912, for which he received. eight _ strobes of the birch; breach of Licensing Act, ' for which he was fined : £1; 'and disorderly conduct, £1, or seven days' imprisonment.':
The Magistrate imposed a sentence of 14 days' imprisonment, _ with hard labour, and ordered the bicycle to be returned to its owner. Machinery will be put in motion to have the lad committed to an industrial school. .
A man named Arthur Roddy was charged with having broken two panes of glass, valued at 10s., the property of Theresa Rose: The evidence showed the defendant had been permitted to rent a room at the complainant's house, on condition that he did not drink. On Friday night ho returned to the house under.the influence of liquor, and because he was ; refused admittance broke two glass panels of the door. . He was convicted and fined £1, ordered to make "good the 10s., and costs 45., in default three days' imprisonment,.
Four first offenders for insobriety, including one female, were dealt with- in tho usual manner.
Philip M'Kenna was convicted and fined £2, in defaujt 14 days' imprisonment, on a charge of having committed a grossly indecent act in Drummond Street.
