ANNUAL SPORTS MEETING

THE BELGIANS ASSISTED

The annual athletic sports of the Wellington College boys were successfully 'carried out yesterday in fine weather. There was a large attendance, composed , mostly of friends and parents of the boys. The events Were keenly contested, and some very good performances were put up, A long jump record waa created by P. K. Dryan, who broke Goodbehere's record (20ft.), of 1904 and 1905, by three inches. During the afternoon the boys, assisted by lady friends, wild flowers and sweets, in aid of tha Belgian Relief Fund, and by their efforts raised £15. At the conclusion of the sports Mrs. J. P. Firth presented the champion cups to the winners. In a short speech the headmaster (Mr. J. P. Firth) explained that no prizes were to be awarded'this year, as the boys had decided that the money don ate d_ for the purpose should go to the Belgian Fund. • He was sure the donors would appreciate the stand taken up by theiboys, who,, instead of prizes, would be given certificates, which they would value in years to come. He commented on the bravery of the Belgians, who had . so nobly, fought Britain's battles. No one could appreciate, he said, all the hardships they had giho through,, and they-were deserving of every assistance. ; The fcchoo'l . would have the satisfaction of knowing that it had raised £250 for •the relief funds; (Applause.)
