PATRIOTIC CONCERT
•A patriotic concert, the) proceeds of w'liich are ft' be devoted to the'Mavbr's Relief Fund, was"given'' in" the"'Town Hall last ejening' by 'the sfew "Zealand Natives' Association. 1W "attendance was hot sp'jargs'as'it niight'have'been had the weather been more agreeable, but those who were present had' the pleasure of listening to an excellent programme of stirring "patriotic'songs. The red, white,-' and blue '. was very largely to be seen in the decorative effects of the hall, the stage having teen draped with the •colours, \yhile all the choir seats, - .were filleii' with' schoplchildrtu} dividpd into three squads'" each distinguished by a'broad ban'd'of red or'white or blue, and all'carrying small flags of. the. Allies. "This'choir of children was .qiiitp one of the 'features of"the evening," as in most of the songs they joined in the chorus; waving their flags and singing with'the greatest heartiness under the cdnductorship of Mr. W. M'Laughlih..' Their performances were really admirable, and the fresh childish voices undoubtedly gave a stimulus'to 'the pleasure'of the audience. "The programme opened with tho National 'Aiithem, played by the New Zealand Natives' Association's ' Orchestra, which followed with ail Overture'by Keler Bela. Mr. Charles Clarksoh sung the "R«d, White, and Blue" (chorus'by tho children), ''Empire of the". Sea',"' and "Rule Britannia" admirably; Mr. Courtenay- Mohr sung the "Deathless Array" and "The Trumpetor," and''Miss Mina _Caldow -stirred her hearers' wifh her singing of "Land .of Hope' 'and Glqry," for which she -received 'an"insistent encore.' Messrs. Currie' -and Shardlow played'a cornet duet, "The Bird in the Forest," and a piccolo duet was" contributed by Messrs. iSlihifie and Grix. The "N.Z.N.A'. Orchestra also co'iitTibuted' a! march' "With' Trumpet; and Drum," an overture, "Light Cay-: airy,".' and the 'National Anthems" of Russia, France, and' Britain, music wliich no one can"hear iii' t'hese 'dayswithout feeling the'blood run a little quicker. During the interval an auction ealo of two dolls was conducted by Mr. Wallace, "which resulted in the' slim of £3 14s. being added to the fund.
