WELMNGTOty PENTRE MEETING

Mr. E. if. Hill presided at a meeting of . the . executive of the' Wellington Bojylirig Gpmmitteb ' last ' There was considerable discussion over the of the appointment of an p'mciai' bowttester for the centre. Mi'. J."'J.''Roberts,"secretary, 'moved: '"That Mr; H. Mayor 'bo 'appointed"' official tester." In" support of 'his'mbtipri, Mr. Roberts stated Mr'. 'Mayer had visited Diinedi'n recently, .and had'received instruction jn |r° m Mr. Scott,'"'Mr. '_ Mayer was'prepared to accept the position', and furthermore he was prepared to again visit Dunedin for further instruction.

Mr. F. Lawrehsph! moved an amend; merit to the effect that applications should be invited for the position. He contended that the centre should try to obtain the services of the'best, man available. Mi\ Lawrenson proceeded'to discuss the question of'"green testing" against "hoard testing."' Subsequently Mr. Lawrenspn withdrew his amendment. It however, immediately moved by'Mi\_S. Underwood', and added, that applications should -close l)y November 21. The amendment was defeated and tho motion earned by 6 votes to 3. ' '.;

It was resolved that the Wellington pliib b.o asked to allow all bowls to bo tested on their green. It was also decided that the testing pnd stamping fso ha jjot'morg tlipn 6ix)»eiioo jjw'bowlj

the amount ip each case to go to the tester.

Mr. T. Gray, of the Kolbura Olub, was elected to fill a vacancy on the executive.

"TWO FEET ON THE MAT." THE NEW RULE CRITICISED. A burning question with bowlers and bowling clubs throughout the Dominion at the present time is the new rule recently adoptod by the Dominion Assowhich states that a player when delivering his bowl must have his two ieet on the mat.

A letter was received from the Wellington Club protesting against this new rule. The communication stated, -inter alia, that" the club's directors were of the opinion that the new rule was not in. the best interest of die game. The eystem just superseded had been found suitable and effective in the home of bowling—Scotland—and that being so some stronger reason'than the Wishes of Australian players should bo shown before such a drastic 'change was made. The effect of'the change would be that the great bulk'of the players in the Dominion would be compelled to go through 'the drudgery' of learning a new style,- and as- a result adopt an attitude on the mat which - is neither graceful nor effective." '" •-.-••■". It was further pointed out that whilo the Dominion'Association'had a perfect right to make such {Pride apply to competitions controlled 'by that', body,' "it was _ an."unwarranted interference' with the internal management of clubs' to at tempt t<r : .erifbr'ce' it in cliib'-play : and competitions. If it be correct-that the new 'System would preserve the green's,' that was. surely a matter for the dub's owning them, and-the fact that there has been no general"demand for the change would go' to show that there is nothing in such'a, contention'.' '" •'"'"' , Considerable discussion followed over /the let.ter, 'and' "several' members expressed their opinions against the new rule very emphatically'. The general trend of the discussion was to the effect that "the two feet on the mat", rule had not been fully discussed by players and clubs before it had beei) adopted by thp Dominion Associatiph, "and it was suggested that ondeavours should be made to haye! the opinion of bowlers generally on "the matter. Witli this object in view,'on the motion' of Mr. J. J. Roberts, it was resolved that clubs be circularised asking them to call'a meeting of members to consider the "two feet on the mat" proposal and to' instruct their'delegates how to vote" on the Question. .'.'"'.'''■.''■■: .•'"".
