A LECTURE ON CHINA

'An interesting and instructive lecture on China, illustrated by lantern views, was given by Dr. Mackliri, from China, in the Church of Christ,* Vivian Street, last night:. The Mayor (Mr. J. P. Luke) presided over a very large attendance. ■ , ' ■ In introducing the lecturer, Mr. Luke Baid he was a native of Cana'da, and had done a great deal of work, both missionary and medical, in China. The Mayor welcomed Dr. Macklin on behalf of the citizens.

The, lecturer explained that he would deal with his subject as the views were projected on- the. screen, and by way of commencement a number of Chinese boating scenes were shown and-interest-ingly dilated upon by Dr. Macklin. The lectuier spoke to some length on missionary work, in China, 3nd incidentally showed many and beautiful pictures of Chinese templeß and , pagodas. Christianity, he said, was gradually breaking down idolatry in that country. The speaker then went on to trace the growth.'of the v Chinese revolution, and the slides shown in this connection were .very interesting. _ - At the oonclusion of his address, Dr. Macklin was,- on the motion of Mr. Luke, accorded a. hearty vote of thanks. The, Chinese Consul, Mr. Kwei Chih, wa3 among those present.
