— : e- - - MR. R. A. WRIGHT AT PAREMATAi The campaign for the Wellington Suburbs seat was continued on Saturday evening, when Mr. R. A. Wright delivered' an address at Paremata. . Mr. Buekland presided, Mr. Wright, who was -warmly applauded on rising to' speak, vigorously defended tlie -action of -the Government in appointing a railway expert. He pointed out that the suburban service'had been^ improved, and no doubt further improvements woidd be made in the future. He also, in reply to interjections, dealt with the strike of last, year, contending that no Government worthy of tho name could have pursued any other course than that. .adopted.by the present Administration. In answer to questions, Mr; Wright said that the faros on tho-Manawatu line .were cheaper under Government control than they were under the company. To another interjection the. speaker < said that ih. M'-assey had never opposed the principle of tho old ago pensions scheme. On.the motion.of. Mr.,. Brown, second-; ed by Mr." Parris, a vote of thanks and confidence Was carried. Mr. Wright will speak to-night at Pukehuia (Newlands), at 8 o'clock., v WELLINGTON NORTH. ; A well-attended open-air meeting was held at.Hawkestone Street on Saturday night in support of Mr." H. Holland, the Social Democratic candidate for. Wellington North..' The meeting was addressed by several electors of- this .constituency. Mr. Herdman and the Massey Government were severely attacked along-the usual lines.. The speakers, who included .Messrs. Read, Fraser, and Hickey,, called upon the .electors to vote for the Labour candidate,'and thereby; show •their detestation of this "reactionary" Government. . THE WAKATIPU SEAT. ißy Teleeraph—Prase Association.) Dunedin, November 5. Mr. Joseph Stevens, who is 'opposing the Hon. W. Fraser for the Wakatipu seat, delivered his first address on Thursday evening at Clyde'i He criticised tho Government for not immediately having- imposed a war tax. The Government had increased borrowing and increased per capita the debt. Ho said the Government had condemned an' increase of grants in election year, but had now given promises they had not the money to fulfil, and the next Government would he forced to borrow on a bad market to redeem them. The candidate also condemned tho appointment of a Public Service Commissioner, and the new railway programme, particularly in reference to the large expenditure ori Auckland City. The Government was'not sincere, as it had not carried the freehold to a logical issue, and granted endowment tenantsthe same privileges as ordinary Crown tenants. The speaker was accorded a Vote of thanks and confidence.
