Many bousewives of Petone, parWouiarly'.'those cooking with gas, were 'surprised yesterday, afternoon to find the jets suddenly extinguished. It appears that Iα leak occurred in.the gas .'main, and pending the repair of it'fhte sup--ply liad to he temporarily cut<ff. , ■ At a meeting of the Lower Hutt District- Higl). R. Floming, /Chief Inspector, had vjsited the schcJl, also inspected the new building at Eastern Hutt, and decided to order 50 ydual desks, 15 of whjch.aro.to be provided at once. The chfiirman of the cbmmittoe had presented to .the sdliool the "Weekly Press"'shield, which, was won by the .Lower Hutt Cadets last year, the ecore being the higbesfc' in the North 'Island, lledais were presented to the members of the successful team (tori hoys), in this connection/( Sergeant Arthur Clifford also''received a medal for the highest score in/tho Wellington, district, and a cup forfhe; highest score in the scutliern half of the North Island. Swimming certificates were, also presented to nine boys for distances from 300 to 1100 yards. A scheme for prizes was submitted by the headmaster; and a sub-committee consisting of Messrs. Baldwin/ Burns, and Woodward was set up to consider ways and. means of raising/funds for this I purpose. • ' At jtho Petone Rowing Club's shed last evening a lecture was delivered by Mr. Leo of the Star Rowing Club on matters pertaining to rowing.
