Thomas Maude; solicitor, defended by Mr. C.P. Skerrott/K.0., pleaded not guilty, to a charge of theft of £100 from Elizabeth Barnett. ,An application for more details of the charge, made by Mr. Skerrett, was held over, His Honour saying the depositions in the meantime gav6 the details, which the Crown relied,on. Mrs. Barnett stated'that" the £100' was giveu to Maude and Harman in 1908, to be placed at interest on. first mortgage.' The interest; fell in arrears in 1912, and she asked , Maude to sell up the mortgagor. .. He said .he would rather not do this, as he saw another form of solution. Shediscovered that the deeds said by Maude' to have been lodged with the bank were not. .there. . Maude paid £500 when' pressed by her solicitor, and said he would not pay'tho remainder. ' Cross-examined, Mrs. Barnett ' said that on March, 19, 1908, she lent the firm of Maude and Harman £1800 on call;'at; six percent., £1500 was subsequently placed in Maude's hands ( : Mrs. v Barnett clearly understood, for investment. In 1909, £1099 was paid off the £1800, and the debt balance ofprinci-" pa] and interest in 1910.
