BOYS' INSTITUTE
MONTHLY REPORT. The director's report for October, as presented to the Executive Committee on Monday night, snowed that thi6 organisation is capably maintaining its very useful work among the boys of the city, In-the matter of securing boys for positions, many inquiries are received both • from employers and from boys, and in many cases suitable lac's are found for offices, factories, trades, messages, etc. The annual sports of the 'institute were held at Kelburn Park on Labour Day, when over CO boys competed in a variety of events, totalling 33. The"cup winners were Henry Brown (junior), Henry Hall (intermediate), and Honry Hay vice (senior). On Friday last the annual boxing championships woro held, Mr. E.'A, Dawson acting as judge and Mr. L. T. Watkins as timekeeper. Thore were 16 bouts decided during the evening, and in addition'to the prizes in the 6even grades, there were two specials presented by Mr. Dawson, one for the best boxer under 7st. —wiuner George .Hickling, and the other for the best boxer over 7st., Harry Hall. The other winners were Ernest Burbidge, C. Itusterliolz, J. Ryan, J. Ruddle, and A. M'Carlie. ' ~ Tlja numerous classes, including swimming, life-saving, fife band, orchestra, and tho stamp club are' continued as usual, and in the Boys' League cricket competition, one team is entered in each grade, both of them scoring a win in their first match on, Saturday. v Many of the Old Boys, as well as several of the present members of the institute, aro now on eon-ice, some at '■ the' forts and otlior stations, some ot .Samoa, and somo with tho Expeditionary Force. , ' , - . Thus tho various branches aro kept going; and tliis is backed up by the religious work, as slipwn by the helpful hoys' service every Sunday evening. For the coming Sunday Mr. R. Brown, a well-known worker among young people, will be the speaker.
