; The funeral of the:late Mr. Stanley S. Brown took, place yesterday. Though .the interment was private there was a 'large ; attendance of his friends and; associates. :■■ The chief mourners werethe brothers of, the deceased, Messrs. J. A., A. E., andWi Brown, and his brother-m-law, Mr. John O'Shea.
Captain Rainey, of the' Tyser Company, arrived, from Sydney by the Ulimaroa yesterday. ;
-.'Dr. A. A. Martin, of Palmerston .North,, is gazetted in the "British Medical Journal" of September 5 as having been granted'temporary rank of lieutenant, Royal Army Medical CorpB 1 .
'The funeral of tho late Mr. John Clement; which took place at Taita on Sunday, was numerously attended. The deceased, who. made his ,home in the 1 Hutt Valley as far back as 1849, was a fine specimen of the hardy old pioneer. Mr.' Clement' thought nothing of walking from Taita to Wellington and back again/te attend Divine service on a. Sunday; and from the outset of his life in the district he.was a strong worker in the cause: of Methodism;, The funeral service was conducted by the Rev. W. Beckett, essisted by the Rev. J; J. Lewis, of Petone. Prior to the funeral Mr. i CM. Luke delivered an appfopriate.iaddress at the late home of 'tho deceased,' and the Rev: 'Jas. Dawson led in prayer. • News has been received in Wellington that Captain Estcourt; who came to New Zealand as aide-de-camp to Lord Islington, and subsequently became military ' secretary to General Godley, has been taken prisoner by the Germans. Captain:Estcourt was serving with the Scots Greys in France. .;•: Tho members of tho "HumptyDumpty" Pantomime Company are to leave Sydney direct for Wellington 'on Friday next.;/ : The members- of the Julius Knight Dramatic Company, to the number of 54, arrived' from Sydney by the TJlimaroa yesterday, and leave for Christchurch this evening/ The company'is not to appear in Wellington until Boxing Night.'
