JOTTINGS FROM PROVINCIAL CENTRES. (From Our Special Correspondents.] PALMERSTON. The Kairanga County. Council yesterday presented the retiring chairman, Mr. L. R. Bryant, with a handsome armchair. Mr. Bryant has been nineteen years a councillor, but is now coming to reside in the town of Palmerston. ~ •■ While cycling .on Monday, Kenneth Innes, a pupil of tho Waitaki High School, and a son of Mr. J. P. Innps, solicitor, of this ' town,' collided with another cyclist and had his leg broken. His father left yesterday for Oamara. Mr. Poynton, S.M., lectured at ton recently on Bacteriology, giving an interesting resume of '. microbes and 'their place in nature. ; Mr. Poynton, S.M., has. decided a singular case, in which two trustees of the Palmereton Homing Pigeon , Society sued Mr. R.. Edwards,_ a prominent townsman and homer pigeon fancier, for the return of the shield known as the "Federation Shield," or its value, £4. The trustees,. who were Messrs. Percy Robert and P. J. Lissington, won tho ca6e as claimed, with £2 16s. costs.

In continuance of the River Board inquiry several objectors have given eviMr. ; Duncan Sinclair considered the expense. should be borne.by residents on the immediate river bank. Mr. Edward Hurley considered the rating area was too restricted, and that expert engineers should be engaged to prepare a scheme for the entire watersheds here and in.other parts of Now Zealand.- Mr. R. S. Abraham said flax lands now worth £20 to £30 an ! acre would increase 'to £50 and £60 an acre, and rank wfSi the best agricultural land in the Doiainion, if saved from floods.

MASTERTON.

Eighteen candidates will sit at' the University examinations, which open in 'Masterton on ' Wednesday. . The Very, Rev. Dean M'Kenha, V.G., will bo supervisor. v The Masterton Homing Pigeon Club flew a race from Timaru. on Monday. Six lofts competed, represented by thirty-six birds. The first bird _ to "home" was Drake Bros.' "Little Mary," which,did the journey, against severe weather, in 15 hours 45 minutes.

OTAKI

The annual social in connection with the Ngati&wo. Morris-tube Club was, despite inclement Weather, a great success. During the evening Mr. W. D. Bennett urged the ladies to become members .of the club,' and try their hands at shooting, which was excellent sport.' The trophies won during the season were presented by Mr. H. Bond. For these trophies there were two series. The ; first prize in the first series, for scratch men (Mesßrs. Odlin's trophy), was Von by J.. Stubbings; second prize in same .'class (club's trophy), R. J. ■ Stubbings. in the handicap men, same series,'first prize, presented by Mr. R. J. Stubbings,. was won by W. D. Bennett; second prize, club trophy, C. Jolly. In the second, series, the first prize for scratch men (Mr. C. Symonds's trophy), fell to 6. A. Monk, and that for the handicap, men .(Co-operative trophy),, to C. Ssinonds. In addition, aggregate prizes were' presented. Fourteen shoots, were held tor these prizes, the eight highest counting. The prize ( for the scratch men —a medal —was won' by G. A. Monk, who also holds for one year a oup presented by the Otaki Dairy Company. The handicap aggregate prize was won by-J. D. Bennett. , Mr. A. Rudkin, from the Training College, Wellington, has succeeded Miss Hall on the, staff of. the Otaki State School. Mr. Rudkin commenced his .duties yesterday. ■;■■'."■' ;. Miss L. ; E. Hall, who recently resigned her position as assistant, mistress at the- Otaki State School, left on Friday last. Prior'to her departure she was presented with several mementoes by the school children; who expresed regret at her-departure: Miss Hall is now stationed at Dalefield, in the.Wairarapa., I , Mr. 6. Stratton, of Manakau,_ has bought Mr! Retter's farm at Levin.

Mr. B. Wadham,- of Carterton, has disposed of Ms business to. Mr.W.; R. M'Lepd. The settlers in the Northern Parkvale district are. taking steps to get a rural mail delivery;, - : A heavy gale, extending over six hours, raged here on. Sunday night, and the force did damage to a number of l oofs and chimney-tops, as well as to 'fences and sheds. ' ' The Wairarapa; South County Council has decided to rebuild Crewe's Bridge, Gladstone, in concrete at an estimated cost of. £160. ;

CARTERTON
