INCIDENT OP THE BATTLE OF ' LA BASSEE - \ —; —— Paris, November 1. Tlie British troops posted .at La Bassce Canal were in. an exposed position,- and were subjected, to heavy fire from-the German-field artillery. They requested the French to give assistance, and Baron Doulenbourg's battalion advanced over open ground under'heavy fire in short rushes,. suffering severely. Finally they charged wiijli the bayonet, capturing the farms, from .which ..they :eaiiiladed the German trenches, enabling the British to advance. '
The British troops, - _ admiring the French courago, stood in the trenches and cheered. The Brigadier wrote to til© French General,, thankiiig him, and congratulating his battalion on their fine work. '. 7.'
