RACING AT FLEMINGTON

DERBY SURPRISE THE FAVOURITES UNPLACED By Telegraph—Frees Association—Copyright (Rec. October 31, 7.55 p.m.) Melbourne, October 31. Anticipations that tho crowd at the Melbourne Cup Meeting would be , as big as ever were borne out by the attendance on the opening day, when, despite light, continuous rain, all the stands were packed. The Federal and' State Government House parties were present, accompanied by those from Adelaide and Sydney. The application of water was deemed necessary, and, as rain followed, tho going" was heavy. Tho Derby, it was anticipated, was to have proved a match between Woorak and' Mountain Knight, but both failed dismally. The other interesting phase of tho event was the race between tho two Oaks candidates, Carlita and Traquette. It was considered that the latter hung too closely to Woorak. Th© surprise ot tbo race wa6 the running of Giru, a Melbourne Cup candidate, and Indiscretion. The Melbourne Stakes was a splendid race, and the winner put up a, fine performance.
