PROFESSIONAL ORCHESTRA
I. ■ a A PATRIOTIC CONCERT. The boisterous weather.last night had some; effect on the excellent concert "given' by the Professional Orchestra in the Town. Hall towards the. Mayor's Patriotic- Fund. Quite a respectable crowd, braved the waj' of-the elements, and as a result tho orchestra will be able to-hand ovey.:£2B to the-fund. The '-'piece-de resistance" of the programme: was, of course, Tschaikoyeky'S: •'1812" overture. : Several times in past years has the samo orchestra quite successfully rendered i the well-known overture, yet aeverr was it more appropriate, and perhaps-, never better given, than last night. The Wellington Tramways Band assisted .in the great £nale. Another appropriate, yet not so well known, number by tho same' composer was also played. This was "Marche Slave," .another work which Techaikovsky "wrote to order" during the Turco-Servian: War of 1876. 'The piece is descriptive of the clish of Russian .arms. Other numbers on the programme were three African Dances of Montagu Ring's, (1) "The Call to the Feast,",(2) 'luleta's Daaice," and (3) /'Dance of the Warriors," and Dvorak* "Humoreske;"- Mi-; Hamilton Hodges gave a stirring and characteristic rendition of an air from Handel's "Messiah," "'Why Do the Nations so Furiously Rage Together?" (another appropriate item). Mr. Hodges repeated the number in response to insistent demands for an encure. During an- interval Mr. Robert Fletcher, in a short speech,- an- • uounced the result of the collection at tho doors..'; , . . ■
