Referring to the type of Kitchener's recruits, he said he was told by an officer that one lot of 50,000 reminded him of Cromwell's' Ironsides. They were selected from Methodists, Presbyterians, and Baptists, and were filled with religious' fervour and prayed nightly to God to strengthen their hands to break Prussian militarism. This fervour was backed by splendid physical powers.
