iTrom Our Special Correspondent.l A man was arrested at Lower Hutt yesterday by, Constable Holmes,.,of the local police, on a chaTge, of theft of an overcoat, the property of a Wellington resident. .Tho garment is alleged to have been taken from the Hutt Lyceum some months ago while a "social" -was being • hold there. The result of the "social" held at Petono.on Monday evening in connection with tho Hutt Valley Labour Day Carnival, the proceeds' of which are to bo devoted to the. local Distress Fund, was: Receipts,"£l4 10s. lOd.; expenditure, £8 19s: lOd.; credit balanco, £5 Us. In. connection with the- forthcoming general election, the Hutt No-License 1 Lcaguo last evening set : up a "war offico" in the central portion of Jackson .Street, Petone. ■ ■' A most enjoyable, "basket party" was held last evening at the Raufurlv Hall, Petone, by tho members of the Hope of Potone Lodge, 1.0.G.T.. Tltoro was a good attendance, 'and it is .anticipated that as a result several new candidates will join llie Order. _ ' On Tliursday and Friday evenings the Hutt Valley Dramatic Society staged the comedy, "Dr. Wake's "Patient," at the Petone Lyceum. There were fair attendances at each production, and the proceeds go to the local Distress Fund. Mr. F. Mason acted as stago manager, Mr. W. Andrews property-master, and Mr. A. Bennett as secretary. The orchestra consisted of Messrs. Ninness, Hutchoson, Swayslnnd, and Cambourne, who played the incidental music. A first-aid class for meii was commenced at Potone last evening, Dr. Ross lecturing to a good muster of candidates. ' At the regular meeting of tho Upper Hutt Town Board last evening, a report by Mr, J. Blackmail, gas engineer, Mastertoii, on the gas lighting scheme for the town, was submitted. In his report, Mr. Blackmail estimated that the cost of establishing suitable works ajid plant would bo £4050, and tho total cost including pipes and' street lamps £8483; He ndvised raisins a loan of £10,000 for tho purpose. The engineer suggested 'the ground next to the railway, sheds as the most suitable site for the works, owing to its proximity to the railway sfritio'n and consideration of the report was deferred for a month.
