It was necessary, for tho contractor to sink seven feet beyond the contract depth, as the country at his 100-foot mark wa.s not suitable for placing the main shaft bearers.. These are placed at a suitable position just below the 100 feet, and a few feet additional sunk to allow of one set of shaft timbers being placed below the shaft bearers, and two i'eet is squared out below this last set, and everything iE left in order for sinking additional depth when required. The work oi rfnkinc and timbering has been thoroughly well done, a«id will bear Mi« closest Inspection. I am now . preparing to open out a. chamber slightly below tho thousand-feet mark, and this,will he on the north end of the shaft to suit cages and winding. I intend to cut the chambor. on wages, employing eight men from tho contract on six-hour shifts, with two in each drift, and will start the work on Monday, October 26. at 6 a.m. We shall have quite 18ft. of well in the shaft bottom' for accumulation of water. We «to proceeding with the erection of winding engine, All machinery, etc., is working well.
