PAHIATUA.
The dry weather spell seems to have broken. On Wednesday evening heavy rain fell for about three hours. A cold snap was experienced on Thursday, which was followed by westerly winds/' and rain on Friday morriing. The rajn was badly needed- all through the Pahiatua district, and . will do an immense amount of good to the pastures and crops. Farmers who have resided in the district many years state that such a lengthy spell has not been known to have occurred in the spring in this locality. ' Shearing has commenced in'the Pahiatua and 'Akitio ■ districts. Tho changeable weather experienced this week would not be beneficial to newlyshorn sheep, although as'far as can be no losses have occurred amongst the Hooks. At the annual meeting of the Pahiatua Racing Club this week the financial statement showed that the assets (ground and buildings, owned by the club), valued at a low figure, were worth about' £250 in excess of the liabilities. It was decided to hold over the election ■ of officers until a future date. Mr. 0. 0. M'Adam, sole teacher at the Mangarama School, lias resigned his. appointment. ' '..'!■ ' . The third contest between Pahiatua und Woodville card players, held at Pahiatua this week, resulted in a win for, the Pahiatua iteam. Pahiatua has won two out of. the three competitions. The. settlers of'the Mangahao district are experiencing some difficulty in pro- • curing a resident to take charge of the Mangahao Post Office. The present postmistress has resigned owing to the ■ salary (£lO a year) being too small. At a meeting of settlers held this week it was decided to apply for a rural delivery service. Mr. Bibby, one ot the settlers, has agreed to take over the position or postmaster for a time. The.Pahiatua Swimming Batlis will be opened for tbo season on Novomber, 1.
