S.P.C.A
; THE ANNUAL REPORT. The annual report of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals states that the annual subscriptions have, increased by nearly £40 over those ot last year. Tho society is indebtedto the trustees of the T. G. Macarthy Estate for a donation of £100. Tho society's best thanks are also duerto tho City Council for their annual donation of £6; to the Railway Department,-the Karori, Miramar, and Eastbourne Borough Councils for free passes granted to the society's inspector. Thero has been no decrease in the number of cases investigated and dealt with, but the number of cases in which it was de'emed necessary to prosecute have fortunately been fewer. "In order to educate tho public as to their responsibility' with rogard to the treatment of dumb animals, a. supply of literature was imported . from •London and distributed bv the_ inspector' in those quarters where it was deemed advisable. Framed .notices containing extracts from the Police Offences Act, 1908, relating to cruelty to animals have also been placed in tramway waiting sheds in Wellington suburbs, and also in the railway stations around Wellington. It' was with extreme regret that the resignation of Mrs. M. A. Williams as a member of the committee was received at the end of the year. A draft constitution for a proposed New Zealand society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals was brought before the committee, but after careful consideration it was decided that, while approving of tho general principle of a central body, owing to the jack of unanimity amongst all the societies concerned, tho time was not opportune for the- carrying out of such a scheme. Tho annual meeting takes place this evening in Winder's Building.
