Ho leaves for tho south tomorrow night. , A letter was read in the Legislative , Council yesterday afternoon from His , Excelloncy the Governor (Lord Liverpool) expressing tho gratitude of himself and the Countess of Liverpool in tho -motion of sympathy passed by the Council to Her Excellency, in tho loss of her brother, -who was killed in 1 action at the front. It was decided to record tho letter in the Journals of tha Council. ; - The City Council last night carried resolutions condoling with the relatives of the late Mr. T. K. Macdonald (an excouncillor) and with the relatives of the late Mr. C. T." Benzoni (an ex-council-lor). The council, also expressed sympathy with ex-Councillor Muidoch in his recent sad bereavement. Sir Walter Buchanan, M.P., attend- , ed the CarteTton Show yesterday, and in the evening returned to Wellington. Mr. R.. H. Meade has been appointed a stock; inspector in the Department of Agriculture, and the following have been appointed inspectors , under the Noxious Weeds Act, the_ Rabbit Nuisance Act, and tho Fertilisers - Act: — ■William Alexander, James Peter Wilson, Charles Augustus Pickering, Leonard James Barton Grant, and R. J. Downing. ' The members of the Julius Knight Dramatic Company leave Sydney today for Wellington direct. ' The New Zealand tour commences at. Christchurch next week. 'The company-in-cludes' Misses Lizette Parkes and' Irene Brown. Commissioner and Mrs. Richards,' of the Salvation Army, leaving Wellington to-day for Auckland, en route to Canada. In the course of Colonel Stuart Newall's remarks on the presidential restrictions imposed on Maori war pensioners, ho mentioned the name of an Imperial officer who was at one time stationed in New, Zealand as a paymaster of Imperial pensions.' -The name of that officer was Colonel Haultaino, who, incidentally, was -the uncle of Mr. Wm. Lingard, of this city. Captain Horace ' White-Parsons, R.N.R., late master of tho Union Company's Tarawera, left Wellington for Napier last evening to take up his new appointment as harbourmaster at Nar pier. Captain White-Parsons first ivent/to sea twenty-ono years ago as an apprentice on .the barque Alcesfcis. After having served his time ho was appointed second'mate of tho ship Hermione in-1897. The same year no entered the service of 'the Union Company as fourth officer, and was subsequently chief officer of the Moana, Warrimoo, Maitai, and Marama. Fivo years ago Captain White-Parsons was appointed to take command of tho Kini, and since that time he has had charge of the Kaiapoi, Komata, Whaugape, Poherua, Monoivai, and Tarawera. Mr. Georgo Blood, representing the Le Roy, Talma, and Bosco Company, is at present in Wellington making arrangements' for the Wellington season, which opens next week. Last evening at tho William Booth Memorial Training College, the Wellington and Training Home divisions, headquarters, social, field,, and 'other staffs-gave a farewell mooting to Commissioner and Mrs. .Richards. The ohief secretary (Lieutenant-Colonel Powley) and others delivered felicitous speeches, and the Commissioner and Mrs., Richards made feeling replies. Letters,' appreciative of tho Commissioner's. work, wero received from the , Prime Minister, the Mayor,' and other people. Mr. John Smith, an ex-City Councillor has been confined to his bed for some days. ' Tho Mayor (Mr. J, P. Luke)' stated at tho City Council meeting last night that Mr. Smith had been seriously ill during the week, but was now considered to bo on the improve. A resolution was carried ex-' pressing the bop#that Mr. Smith would have, a speedy' return to health. Mr. J. Duggan, of the.Timaru Magistrate's Court- staff, has been transferred to the Palmerston > North Magistrate's Court on promotion. Before the ordinary business of the City . Council was proceeded with last night the Mayor (Mr. J. P. Luke) moved a resolution, condoling with their Excellencies the Earl and Countess of Liverpool in the bereavement sustained by them in tho death of Her Excellency's brother (the Hon. Captain Monck), who was killed in action in France. The resolution was carried in silence, councillors standing. In May last (states the annual report of the S.P.C.A.) Mr. F. Seed, who has been our inspector for years, resighed from that position owing to advancing years. At a speoial meeting held for the purpose, of making a presentation reference was made to the good work Mr. Seed had done, and a general wish was expressed that he would be spared many years to enjoy a woll-earned rest. Out of a large number of applicants for the position of inspector. Captain James Henry was ( appointed.- The committee are of opinion that the society-is fortunate in so- i curing a gentleman with the vorj high ( qualifications held by Captain Henry.
