j Ig MEETING OF THE CITY COUNCIL. At last night's, meeting of tlie City Council the Mayor. (Mr. J. P. Luke) presided, and there were also present Councillors R. Fletcher, J. E. Fitgerald, R. A. Wright, A. H. Hindmarsli, T. C. A. Hislop, M. M.-F. Luckie, John Fuller, junr., L. M'Kenssie, W. J. Thompson, A. R. Atkinson, H. Buddie, J. Gpdber, G. Frost, and' W. H. P. Barber. Leave of absence was granted, to Councillor E. Tregear. On the recommendation 'of the Finance Committee it ivas decided that the'; sewer be extended along Whaui Street, Vogeltown, and' to William Street, Highland Park Estate, the cost being £60 and-£45 respectively. It was also decided that the Trades and Labour Council be informed, in. reply to their request that the council should, put in hand works to provide employment for carpenters, painters, plumbers, plasterers, . etc., that they have instructed tho, City Engineer to submit a report as to authorised works that can be started immediately. The Finance Committee recommended, and it was agreed, that tenders be invited locally and in Australia for the supply of enamel street name-plates. Fourteen days' extension of time was agreed upon for tho receipt of tenders for the supply of a turn-table fire escape. The tender of Mr. W. Jennings was accepted for the re-papering and painting of the custodian's cottage at the Basin Reservo. A request by the Wellington Firo Underwriters' Association to be permitted to inspect the Firo Brigaao call book from time to time was refused, but the association is to be supplied with a copy of tho superintendent's monthly report on fires after submission to the committee. A report by tho By-Laws Committee stated that, after having paid a special visit of inspection to premises situate at 88 Wakefield Street, in conscquence of the owner's request for a variation of the council's order, they aro of opinion that the whole building should be demolished, and tbey recommend that notice be served on the owner accordingly to carry out tlio demolition within'one month. —Tho report was adopted. ■ _ Oil tho recommendation of the Reserves Committee, it was decided that tho Hataitai Bowling Club be offered tho lease of tho Hataitai Town Hall site for grazing purposes at a, nominal rental .of ss. per annum, provided they erect a five-wire fence.
