HEAVY FIGHTING BY ALLIED TROOP£ WARSHIPS CO-OPERATING " London, October 27, 12.40 a.m. The High Commissioner for New Zealand reports:— The Colonial Office has issued the foljowiug summary of military operations in Nigeria and German Cameroons. On August 25 the British occupied Tepe, and on August 29 attacked the German station at Garua. Our force was heavily counter-attacked .at dawn, suffering considerable losses, and being compelled to retire. It subsequently, retreated into British territory. Another British column, reconnoitring from Ikon, Southern Nigeria, on August 25, occupied Nsanakang, five miles over the German frontier. A third British force from Calabar crossed the Anglo-German boundary on August 29, and seized Archibong. On September 6 the garrison left in-Nsanalcaiig was attacked by the enemy. Tho attack was repulsed, but a second one proved successful. The casualties -were heavy. > Cerman Vessels Sunk. While these events were taking place the warships Cumberland and Dwarf reconnoitred tho mouth of the Cameroon .River. On September 24 tho' French troops attacked Ukoko, attended by the French warship Surprise, and tho Germans were driven back. The German auxiliaries Rhios and Uolo were eunk by the Surprise. On September 27, following a bombardment by the British ships, the towns of Duala and Bonabers surrendered unconditionally. • In the British action in October the French forced.the passage of Japoma Bridge, east of Tivala. , On October 8 an attack was made on Jahassi with naval and military forces. It was repulsed ; but a second attack on October 14 was successful, when Jabassi was occupied. On October 19 we engaged and repulsed the enemy rear Susa, in the uorth of the Cameroons. A column of the Nigerian Regiment occupied tho district around Mora. The Germans .are 'understood to have withdrawn south. The British killed numbered 12 officers and 95 men; wounded, 7 officers and 21 men; prisoners, 4 officers and 49 men. -1
