GOVERNMENT WHEAT FARM THE SCHEME EXPLAINED. (Ileo. October 27/9.40 p.m.) Sydney, Ootober 27. Mr. J. H. Cann, Minister for Lands and Agriculture, explaining the wheat farm scheme of tho Government, stated that the Government was not entering into tho cultivation of wheat merely as a profit-making-business, but mainly to onauro an increased yield next year, and tor the immediate purpose of finding prontablo work for the unemployed, and granting farmers special assistance to accomplish this object. There is every prospect that next harvest will briug a serious shortage to Europe, and the opportuiiity ottered to wheat-growers should not bo missed. With a moderately generous rainfall it is anticipated next season's crop will easily yield a record. Afterwards tho Government wheat farm will be made available as living areas for settlere, and will be ready for tho plough. The value of the improvements will bo added to tho capital value of the land, and tlio cost to the tenant will be spread over a period. If the land is not taken up, tho Government will probably crop it tho following year. / DROUGHT IN AUSTRALIA SHEEPOWNERS IN DIFFICULTIES. (Rec. October 27, 9.30 p.m.) • Sydney, October 27. . Replying to an urgent appeal for increased railway facilities for removing starving stock from drought areas in which it is pointed out that practically, certain sheep-men are faced with enor- . mous losses, the Government authorities state that it is absolutely impossible to do more than they are doing. Both engine power and lines are being taxed to the fullest, and the pressure of the demand for carnages for the export of fat stock to Victoria, where the drought has been severely felt, is adding to the difficulties.
