The majority of the visiting horses had arrived tho previous evening, and a great many horses were seon on the tracks. About the best performance of the morning was registered by Merry Eoo (J. The Officer gelding had had more experience in Sealing Plates than any other horse in New Zealand, he said. Nominations for the Marlborough Racing Club's meeting close on. Monday next. Sir. E. J. RICCARTON TRAINING NOTES. (By Teleeraph.~Spedfll Correspondeht.l Christchurch, October 22.The "Looker On" writes in the "Evening News":— Downstecpy and Blitz were sent up to the four-furlong post on the course proper to sprint home, and a bad accident happened. It is a bad place to jump two-year-olds off from, as it is right on the bend into the straight. When tho two jumped off Downsteepy failed to get round the turn, aud, desmte all the small boy's efforts, went right across the course, and, racing down alongside the outside rails, crashed into the fence at tho carriage paddock. The lad was tossed into the air, and landed on the fence, getting, in addition to a vory bad shaking, a rather nasty scalp wound. Downsteepy was not so fortunate, for lie burst the flesh right from his chest along his brisket, and back past the girth. A veterinary, surgeon was called up and soon stopped the bleeding and stitched the wound up. Downsteepy has been showiDg good form both in his track work and in tho two races ho ran at Dunedin. He was certainly one of tho most promising two-year-olds at Riccarton. The unlucky Wisebird bruised her foot a few days ago, and has been eased in censenuence. It is only little over a fortnight to the meeting, and she is sure to be backward.
