COOK ISLAND BILL
A FEW. SUGGESTED AMENDMENTS.
The Cook Islands Bill, which has been under consideration by the Statutes Revision Committee, was reported to the House yesterday by that committee, with sevoral amendments.
The principal. alteration made is the striking out of tho clauses dealing with the making and execution of ivills by Natives. A new clause wuioh has been inserted provides that in future nq wills made by Natives, shall have any force or effect, and that the persons who shall be_ entitled to succeed to a deceased Native's proporty shall be determined by Native custom so far as such custom extends, and that where no Native custom is applicable, it ehall bo determined in suoh manner as if the deooased were a European. The penalty for supplying intoxicating liquor to a Native, except with the approval of a doctor, is fixed at £60 in the case of a- European, and £6 in the, caso of a Native. Anothor amendment etipulatos that no island council shall havo power to establish courts of justice. Tho Bill has been referred to the Natiyo Affairs Committee for further revision.
