A PROTEST

(To the Editor,) Sir,—On- Oqtober 10 I Teceived an "Extract from Order Paper, House pf Representatives," and to my surprise found my name following "6g5 petition, etc. Same ag foregoing? . This referred to "487" Petition, etc., objecting to the Referendum Bill. I wrote to pur member, Mr. G. R. fSykes, for a copy of "487." It came to hand this morning and I recognised it as the substance of a card I had initialled several weeks ago. Petition 487 is that of Professor Hewitson and has five, paragraphs: a, b, c, d, e. I had initialled two only— a and e, simply as an indication of my position and. my sympathies. At the foot of the card I wrote: "Am opposed to right of entry , and. in favour of two issues heing on ballot paper. I also prefer Nelson system made mandatory." Does that warrant those engineering Potition 487't0 placo my name to Petition 565 and declare it to bo tlie "samo as foregoing" ? x I initialled points (a) and (e). Is that sufficient reason for making mo answerable for (b), (c) and (d), which I disavow Apparently the logic and ethics of some honourable gentlemen need bringing up. to the standard of an ancient code- which declares: "Thou slialt not bear false witness against shy neighbour."—l am, oto., ■ It. L. THOMAS. Masterton, October 21, 1914.
