At the Lower Hutt Police Court yes-tei-day, before Messrs., J; Cudby and W, James, J.P.'s, Erl Skinner was fined £1 for allowing horses' to wander, and for a similar offence' Peter M'Mann was ordered to pay costs, 7s. Francis Twomey was. convicted, and ordered. to pay costs 7s. for allowing cattle to wander. A first offending inebriate was convicted and discharged. A'"rally" of the Hutt Electorate NoLicenso League was held last evening, the Rev. Wm. Beckett presiding over a good attendance. A musical programme was contributed to by tho Misses Millward, Abbott, and Iris Grant, and Messrs. Millward, Chamberlain, and Campbell. A brief address was delivered by the Rev. P. Lascelles, and tho speaker for the evening was Sir. T. Townsend. Tho speaker, who is a representative of the Petbne Boro.ugh Council on the Hutt Park Committee, outlined tho matter of the Hutt Valley Trotting Club's lease of the park, and expressed tho opinion that as the people's representatives the committee was the proper body to rule on the question of licenses on the, park, and pointed out that the Act allowed the chairman and any two members of the Licensing Committee power to grant a conditional liconse ivithout notice, which was not a majority of that body. Referring to tho Petono Council's refusing to contribute its sliaro to tho upkeep of the park on account of tho committee's action with tho Trotting Club, Mr. Tqwnsend stated that the Petono Council had. definitely instructed its representatives how to vote, and they had carried, out their duties by voting in accordanco with tho council's wishes. He had worked late the night thn council passed this resolution, and ''arrived at tho meeting too late to reverse tho decision. At the annual meeting of tho !3t. John Ambulance Brigade (Petouo DivU sion), held at the Bay Street Station, Petone, last evening, the balance-sheet, showing a small credit, was adopted. iTho report stated that one member of the. division had gono to Europe, on activo service, another to Samoa, whilst one.was at Fort Dorset. The secretary (Mr. J. Kyle) intimated that arrangements had been mado to commence a beginners' class next week, and a committee was set up to confer with tho Ladies' Nursing Division with a- view to holding a united ambulance demon- :' stration" shortly. During the evening tho following officers wero elected: — Divisional surgeon, Dr. Ross; superintendent, Mr. E. W. .Andrews] first, officer, Mr. J. Smart'; sergeant, Mr. F. i Raistrick;' corporal, Mr. J. riickoy, secretary and treasurer, Mr. J, Kyle; • Inspector of Stores, Mr. H. E. Browiiej auditor, Mr: W. C. Burd.
