NEWTOWN ZOO

SOCIETY'S ANNUAL REPORT.

The fourth annual roport of the "Wellington Zoological Society, to be pre-sout-ed at tho annual meeting to be field to-morrow evening, states that the past year has been fraught, with a record of steady effort and encouraging success. Iho report goes on to refer to the manner in which the Zoo had become possessed of an aquarium. "The warmth of welcome accorded on the motion of Mr. Lockwood, one of the members of our council, to the proposal," states the report, "and the cordial manner in which the Government, our City Council, and our Zoological Society, have co-operated to establish the aquarium in connection with the Zoo have ruado this year the happiest of our society's existence. We feel that there is great pleasure in working for the' public when the public bodies so cordially cooperate. That all classes of the community approve of what we aro doing, and highly appreciate our work is becoming more and more evident. Our president asked for £10, in aid of our funds, and instantly a gentleman sent to' onr treasurer an offor of £10, on condition that the name of the, donor should not be published. Later we asked for £6 with which to purchase a pair of brush turkeys. Tin public promptly responded with a collection of £11 Bs. lid. in 860 coins But a greater result than any that wo have yet achieved seemed steadily aii<3 surely rising into view. A pair of zebras had been offered for £260. Tho Wellington South Progressive Society, preparing a carnival for their district, agreed to co-operate with our society to raise the money for the purchase of the zebras, several ladies kindly consented to assist, and success seemed certain, when, suddenly, the war clarion sounded, and patriotic movements for awhile postponed our special effort. It will be seen then that we are succeeding in uniting an ever-increasing number of all classesiof people to promote tho Zoo, and spread the popular study of zoology." The report concludes with thanks for generous courtesy to the Mayor (Mr. Luke), Councillor Frost (chairman of the Reserves Committee), the members of that committee,' and all other mem, bers of the City Council, Mr Palmer (Town Clerk), Mr. Langridge (curator of the Zoo), and his staff, and other helpers by whom the secretary Lad been kindly treated and assisted. Tbo balance-sheet shows a credit balance of £12 lGs. Id. This amount! includes £5 55., a refund of the secretary's honorarium as a donation to the society's funds. ..."
