"THIS COUNTRY WILL BE OUR GRAVE"

GERMAN SOLDIER'S LETTER HOME ' London, October 18. An extract from a pocketbook found on a dead German soklior early in October last says:—"At Domremy, the French opened a hellish firo that created a panic. Everybody gave orders and nobody thought to tell us to lie down. It. was a shocking mess. We were ehot at by friend and. foe. The burning of Itethel (in the ArdenneSj 'on the Aisne) was dreadful, while the vandalism has been a disgrace to the German army. The damage done runs into millions of marks. Our losses at Lanteurre were enormous. The 178 th Kegiment alone lost 1700 in wounded, besides killed. It is practically without officers. _ Everybody thinks tlie situation is critical. We advanced too quickly, and the French beat us by using cover. This country will be our grave."
