In tho South Island the imported mare First Glance is fancied as a second leg of the double, New Zealand Cup and Stewards' Handicap. The Middle Park Plate, won this year by Hie Majesty's Friar Marcus, is usually won by a good horse, and past winners include such as Pretty Polly, Bayardo, Lcmberg, and Cragauour. The race has never proved a reliable guide to the Epsom Derby: In foot, during the past 20 years very few winners of the Middle Park Plato have subsequently triumphed in the Derby.'".
