BOWLS

CITY CLUB OPENINGS

AND VARIOUS GAMES

Tlio weather was fine but dull for the opening of the Victoria Club's green on •{Saturday afternoon, when the mountainaide club drew a numerous attendance of visitors from other clubs. The green was m very good order, and care is being taken to protect if from early summer wear on the northern side. The opening ceremony was performed by the Mr. George Snaddon, who, in the course of his remarks, placed , the ladies first, expressing the debt of gratitude the club owed to their devoted attention every Saturday afternoon. During tho winter they had lost a few members, some of them, good players and good men. One in .particular whom ho must mention was Mr. }V. J. Hueston. who was ono of the best of players, and had done more for the club possibly than any other member. Ho was sure that Mr. Hueston, who had gone to Gisborne, would be missed. It was intended to give him a send-off,' but the time was so .short to make the arrangements and ensure a thorough success that nothing was dono. The committee was now considering ways and means of marking Mr Hueston's long and honourable association with the club. (Applause.) Messrs. Besant and Townsend were thanked for certain green improvements. The president urged players to take a keen interest in the game during the coming season, and to enter for all the club matches. If .they always played to win it was surprising to find that they would win fairly often. He hoped the club would have a successful season, and had much pleasure in declaring the green open. Cheers were' given for the president and Mrs. Snaddon, and the latter threw up the first jack, .as the club's ensign was hoisted- to the peak. • The 6et matches played were as follow:—
