ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES

FALL- FROM A GANGWAY. White walking on tho gangway between tho steamer Alaitni and the wharf .yesterday, William Douglas slipped and fell on his head on tho wharf. J-]o was picked up in an unconscious condition, and after being attended to by the ship's surgeon, was removed to tho Hospital, his injuries consisting of concussion of tho hraifi ami fracture of tho base of tho skull. Douglas is ,a married man, 27 years of age, and up till Friday last had been eniplojed a-s pantryman on the Maitai. OLD MAN'S DEATH. An inquest was held on Saturday concerning tho death of John Hughes, an old man, who died -suddenly in the Ohiro Home. Dr. FyCo stated that death was duo to syncope and kidney troublo, probably accelerated by lack of sufficient food. Tho Coroner, Mr. AY. G. Riddell, S.M., returned a verdict in accordance with Dr. Fyffo's evidence. LABOURER OUTS HIS TBEOAT. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) Auckland, October 18. John Douglas, agod 50 years, a labourer at Onehunga, cut his throat on Saturday afternoon at One Tree Hill. Ho left a letter indicating that ho was short of money. FARMER ACCIDENTALLY SHOT. Dunediii, October 18. Robert Nicholson, 30 years of age, a farmer at Waimotu, near Maheno, went out on Friday morning to go round his sheep, taking'with him a gun, apparently with the object of shooting stray dogs. Yesterday he was found dead on the run with a gunshot wound in tho breast. Tlie gun had evidently gone otf while tho man was getting through a fence.
