CLUB CRICKET
OPENING OF THE SEASON THE SENIOR CONTESTS The Wellington cricket- season was opened on Saturday afternoon, and, notwithstanding tho very unusual circumstances overshadowing it, a fair amount of interest was taken in tho matches. Two matches were played on the Baein Kcsen'Gj where the wicker, looked as though it could do with somo ruin. Against Central, University have made a good start; and East appear to have North very well in hand so far as the first innings is concerned. Gibbes and Midlano ore chiefly responsible for the .good position of East. At Petono Recreation Ground, Old Boys met the local team, and put up 159 in their first innings, of which Blacklock contributed 34,' and Tucker ,33, both being caught out. Petono ■secured 41 for throe wickets, Nunn being responsible for 18 not out. JUNIOR. CHAMPIONSHIP. North v. Institute.—North, first innings, 95 (Barker 44, Webb 16); second innings, 12 for one wicket. Institute, first innings, 110 (E. Rcnner 29, G Renner 18, Howitt 14, Morris 10). For Institute, G. Runner took eight for 46. Upper Hutt scored 67 runs for eight wickets, against Petone's 54. M'Vicker secured 23, Mabey 11, and Harris 11, for the former, whilst M'Conncll contributed 13 for Petone. Sa: David's defeated Lower Hutt by 114 to 82, Powell 30, King 24 not out. and Taplin 20 being the highest scorers for St. David's, and Ackroyd taking eight wickets for 40 runs. Paton scored 44 not out for Hutt. Third Glass Championship. Marist beat East by 18 runs in tho first innings. Boyd 44 and Barrett 13 were tho highest scorers for tho winners, and for East Mabin 33 and 25 (not out), and Halley 30. Macarthy bowled best for Marist, and Halley for East. ' Petone A defeated Hutt by 138 runs to 300. The highest scorers were: Dalgleish 20, Doneglme 44, Mockeridge 23, Corner 26, for Petone A, and Manderson 23 and Glennio 20 for Hutt. Petone 13 put up 108 against St. David's 87, the former playing live and tlio latter eight wickets in the second innings. IN OTHER CENTRES. (By xelesroph.—Press Association.) Chrlstchurch, October 17. Beautiful weather was experienced for the conclusion of the first round of the grade matches. East Clvristclrurch, which put- up 364 against West Christchurch in tho iirst innings last Saturday, on resuming to-day at onco declared. West Christchurch made 173 (Dr. Foster 54, C. S. Bryan Brown 27) in their first innings, and East in tho second had mado 74 when play stopped. Riccarton put up 150 in tho first innings against Sydenham. Sydenham B put up 359 (W. Skclton 113, G. C. L. Wilson 88, H. M'Clelland 42, Conradi 26) against St. Albans, 275. Linwood, requiring only '17 runs, won from Kaiapoi.
