HUTT & PETONE NEWS.

(From Our Own Oorrospondenta.) The first meeting of the newly-form-ed No. 5 Platoon, Wellington Rifle Club Reserve Corps (transferred ■: from No. 4 Platoon to, suit Hutt Valley riflemen), was held last evening at Petono, Lieutenant Woods presiding. It was intimated that the first parade of the platoon would be neld on Tuesday October 20, at 7.30, at the Potone Drill Hall, and tho following officers were appointed during the evening:— Lieutenant-in-Chargo, J. Woods; platoon sergeant, M'llvride; corporals, Warburton, Baker, Russell, and Williams ; lance-corporals, Shiel and Ayson. A series of euchre pa-rtios and dances, recently held at the Petone Roman Catholic Schoolroom, concluded with a "social" held at the Petone Drill Hall laet evening. Upwards of 200 persons attended. Messrs. H. Tailored, J. M'Gill, and J. Walsh acted as M.C.'s, and Mrs. J. Pollock supplied the music. There was a splendid attendance at a "social," in aid of the church funds, held last evening at the Petono Church of Christ, Mr. H,. Grinstead presiding. Items were contributed by Mesdames Aehby, Mmgatroyd, Usmar, , and Wright, the Misses Taylor, Batfersby, and Jones, and Messrs. Grinstead, Dekhiinty, Battersby, and G-rinstead. A competition was won by Mr. and Mrs. Battersby, and Miss R. Ashby presided at the piano.
